But now it's 1863, the Civil War is creeping closer to Bayou Grand Coeur, and Amelina discovers a hurt Yankee. Helping him will risk her own life. Can she do what is right? I enjoyed this book. Scientifically sound and easy to read
I laughed, I cried; two thumbs up! A science-based book, complete with citations of all the current literature, coupled with a readable, flowing style of writing. An important repository of all the scientific knowledge of these species in this region and issues affecting them (e.g., fire, climate change), yet engaging even to younger amateur herpetologists. Or, of interest to anyone who simply loves Yellowstone and the Tetons.

Arizona Day Hikes: A Guide to the Best Trails from Tucson to the Grand Canyon
Published in Paperback by Sierra Club Books (May, 1995)
Author: Dave Ganci
Average review score:

Ganci prepares you for the hikes before the descriptions.
The first 62 pages are devoted to preparing the hiker. A complete listing to get you started. Descriptions of geology, climate, animals, and plant life prepare you for the environment you will be hiking. I really enjoyed the geology information. Each hike is rated by time, distance, elevation gain plus an effort rating. Areas of the entire state of Arizona are covered. Less popular hikes rarely published are included too. Well done!

Far Away as the Mind can Travel
This book has not only outstanding photography of many locations throughout the world which are known for romance, history, and culture but also very good historical background information. It accomplishes all of this without being a history book. It is travel and the pleasure of exploring new worlds all at your fingertips! Enjoy it

Au Pays Du Grand Mensonge: Voyage En Coree Du Nord
Published in Hardcover by Serpent de Mer (January, 2001)
Author: Philippe Grangereau
Average review score:

Exceptional report
The author provides a unique view on the political folly of North Korea and its devastating impact on its people. Thorough first hand research leads to a book that reads as reference matter on modern North Korea and a post-communism world.
How timely as the drums of war are now beating on the peninsula.

The Autocourse History of the Grand Prix Car 1945-65
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (October, 1993)
Author: Doug Nye
Average review score:

A detailed, technical & readable look at F1 history & R&D.

I'm a motorsports junkie. Also, I like to know how things "tick". "The Autocourse History of the Grand Prix Car 1945-65" by Doug Nye combines these two interests of mine in a formidable, well illustrated, technical yet readable volume written with great insight from an F1 enthusiast. It's not just a nuts and bolts book, though. The technical evolution of the cars and teams is examined in detail with reference to the context of team management, the drivers involved, the racecourses upon which the championships were contested and with an eye to what the competition was up to meanwhile. Its appendix is just as impressive; it's a formidable gallery summarizing the efforts of all of the others who have contested for the big prize, with varying levels of success.

This is a large hardcover bound book, printed on thick, glosssy stock and includes many black and white photographs of the cars in action, being worked on in the pits and in the garages, their details and some archive photos from the various manufacturers. There is a color center section with some large, full page photographs taken at various venues.

It offers a far more comprehensive look at the sport and its history than contemporary motorsports coverage's often tempered sound bites and superficial exposes. I recommend it and its equally impressive companion volume dealing with Grand Prix formula cars from 1966 to 1991 to the technologically curious and die hard F1 fans as wonderful primers for understanding and enjoying contemporary F1.

The best of Grand Canyon Nature Notes 1926-1935
If you love the Grand Canyon, you will be delighted with this selection of naturalists articles written in the first half of the past century (!). Easy to read, most of the writing consisting of articles of a few lines to a few pages, you can open the book anywhere and transport yourself on or below the rim, at a time when a lot fewer tourists visited the canyon. The book is divided in three parts, Earth sciences (geology, river, sky and seasons), Life science (flora, fish, birds, mammals,) and Human history (archaeology, ethnobotany and history). Nice little B&W drawings throughout the book, this is a very good complement to a visit to the Grand Canyon or to any coffee table picture book on the Grand Canyon usually thin on writing.
